So today I had the idea of making a Pokemon game based on Zoo Tycoon. So instead of training to defeat Team ____ and the Elite 4, you would be training to collect pokemon for your zoo. Half the game would be managing the zoo, like Zoo Tycoon, and the other half would be wandering around the region battling and catching pokemon (like the real games). This game will run on the OpenPokemon engine I've been writing, but will involve a non-traditional battle engine. For example, pokemon attacks will be somewhat like they are in the anime. No limit to the amount you can learn, but it takes time and practice to master attacks and weak pokemon wont be able to use stronger attacks. So you might be able to teach your level 5 charmander flamethrower if you get lucky, but the chance of it successfully using it in battle would be pretty low until it had practiced more and levelled up. Levels will be much less important in this game, so pokemon will still be dangerous even if your 10 levels higher than them. As far as the zoo goes, you would place pokemon in exhibits and have to make the exhibit match what the pokemon likes. You would be able to hire pokemon trainers and nurses to care for the pokemon and you would be able to place things like everstones and berry plants in the exhibits. Unlike Zoo Tycoon, Pokemon would not die of old age. Once they reach full maturity you can sell them or trade them if you don't want them anymore, or store them in your pokemon box if you need more room in the exhibit.

Pokemon view, it has to be pokemon because nobody is going to sprite me a couple hundred overworld/battle sprites for a random game I might never finish. PT is struggling just to get 50 new pokemon =p

You will be able to hire a pokemon breeder and direct them to specific exhibits, not sure if I will make it so you can breed different species like in the real games.

This game idea is just inspired by Zoo Tycoon/Pokemon, I prefer making original games rather than clones. If I had the graphical resources, I wouldn't even include Pokemon. If I wanted to make Zoo Tycoon with Pokemon, I could call it Pokemon Tycoon or Pokemon Zoo or something.

Yeah. If I had a spriter that could make me dozens, if not hundreds, of original "monsters" then this wouldn't be a Pokemon game at all. But I'm pretty picky about my sprites, so I'm not expecting to find a spriter willing to spend months working on high quality (like david or bouncy ball) sprites for a game I'm just making for fun. Maybe I'll include PTs pokemon if Game Fortress says I can, but otherwise this game will mostly feature Pokemon from HG/SS.

Or am I!?!?!!? (No I'm not, but I haven't completely abandoned it either I've just been away from Game Maker) But that said, since development is so slow I don't think I want to waste a spriters time so I'm just gonna stick with the existing Pokemon sprites.
